Statement of purpose (Hong, Kil Dong)
It is clinical physiology that I would like to study at your graduate school. My knowledge and interest stems from the article in the Times that I read by chance in college. In the article, they claimed that the present medical treatment and medication made up of antibiotics as the main part would be replaced with the medical cure using special gene made by the genetic engineering in the future. Moreover, I remember forming a study-case group for this article with my classmates to have a discussion over it more than 2 months.
The “molecular genetics” and “human genetics” classes, which I once took at the university, offered me the motive with which I really started to study on this matter. Along with learning this subject, I was able to have an opportunity to study fully about gene-therapy. As a result, I have taken much interest in the remedy of the disease and the development of medical cure on the gene level. In particular, I have studied on the techniques of RLGS (Restriction landmark Genome Scanning), RFLP (Restriction Fragment length Polymorphism), SSCP (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism), and gene targeting as the extra assignment in the “molecular genetics” class.
During those days, I opened the debate on this matter with my classmates who took the same class with me almost every day now that I was extremely interested in the field. As the result of a series of hot debates, I found that the gene we estimated at tumor oncogene and tumor suppressor gene has been discovered in detail through an analysis of human genome. Through the comparative analysis of human genome between the cancer patients and normal people, I learned that these genes played an important role in terms of function as a genesis of cancer and a remedy of it as well. I decided that it might be so necessary to make the function of these genes clear for a development of anti-cancer gene drug and a product of anti-cancer medicine.
After that, I made up my mind to go to America where they have much more advanced system than the universities in Korea in pursuit of my goal in the field. At your school, I plan to study more profound field in human genetics and molecular oncology upon completing the overall introductory courses in the molecular genetics. Particularly, I dream of making a contribution to the remedy of cancer in the future by discovering the function of human genes through the techniques of targeting and knock-out.
In addition, I am particularly interested in the special life cycle of HIV that belongs to retrovirus family like virus, which is famous for causing cancer as well as AIDS. In college days, I reviewed the theses on the life cycle of HIV and cause of AIDS in genetic class as well as visited LG biotec laboratory institutes on a regular basis in Korea to study privately on AIDS-vaccine which they made. This vaccine was designed for the inhibition of reverse-transcriptase of HIV. I made a presentation of the thesis, called ‘Zinc Stimulates MG2+-Dependent3’-Processing Activity of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type1 Integrase in Vitro’, on the integrase serving as attractive targets in terms of inhibition of HIV life cycle like this vaccine in the seminar class of graduation thesis.
In this seminar, professor showed great interest in the subject that I presented to them. In addition, I have been interested in the continual change in surface antigen, which serves as the main obstacle in terms of medical cure of HIV virus. I think that the research of making the character of these HIV viruses will contribute to the remedy of AIDS, and by taking part in this research group, I hopefully serve for the human species.
When I was a student in the middle school, I read “The Fortress” written by A.J. Cronin. I found that the efforts to keep the value could eventually enhance the value of their own life by recognizing the attitude of a protagonist in the novel. In the novel, a doctor maintained his honesty and sincerity without any compromise with vice. After I complete the Ph.D. course in the clinical physiology, I eagerly hope to contribute to the remedy of cancer while discovering functions of gene-causing cancer and producing anti-cancer material, which works on the cancer specifically.
